What CPAs Do After Tax Day
April 19, 2023The Benefits of Summer Tax Planning
June 22, 20232022 Surplus Tax Refunds have started going out to eligible Georgia residents. Here’s what you need to know about this Georgia tax refund.
The state of Georgia recently began sending the first round of nearly $1 billion in surplus tax funds to eligible taxpayers. In 2022, Georgia was among many other states that returned billions of dollars to taxpayers in the form of “stimulus checks” from surplus tax revenue. Gov. Brian Kemp recently stated, “Georgia is once again in a position to issue surplus tax refunds thanks to years of responsible, conservative budgeting and because we chose to protect both lives and livelihoods during the pandemic.” According to the governor’s office, issuing the special tax rebates this year will take about as long as it took to issue similar special “stimulus payments” last year.
Georgia tax rebates are arriving to those meeting eligibility requirements thanks to legislation known as House Bill 162.
You may be eligible for the HB 162 Surplus Tax Refund if you:
- File your Individual Income Tax Return for tax year 2021 and tax year 2022 by the April 18, 2023 deadline (or by October 16, 2023 if an extension was granted)
- Had a tax liability for tax year 2021
- Are a Georgia resident, part-year resident, or nonresident
Depending on your filing status and tax liability, you could receive a maximum of:
- $250 for Single/Married Filing Separate
- $375 for Head of Household
- $500 for Married Filing Joint
All surplus refunds go to taxpayers (not to tax preparers) and are issued based on the regular refund instructions provided on a taxpayer’s return.
The Georgia Department of Revenue advises taxpayers to allow 6-8 weeks for Surplus Tax Refunds to be issued (if filed by the April 18, 2023 deadline.)
